In doing some testing, I caught a few build issues with
different combinations of enabling and disabling
CONFIG_SCHED_PROXY_EXEC and CONFIG_SMP after syncing
with the v18 of the proxy-exec series.
These fixes were not in the v18 series of the patch, but
I've included them in my tree for v19.

* Suleiman Souhlal noticed an inefficiency in that we evaluate
if the lock owner’s task_cpu() is the current cpu, before we
look to see if the lock owner is on_rq at all. With v17 this
would result in us proxy-migrating a donor to a remote cpu,
only to then realize the task wasn’t even on the runqueue,
and doing the sleeping owner enqueuing. Suleiman suggested
instead that we evaluate on_rq first, so we can immediately do
sleeping owner enqueueing. Then only if the owner is on a
runqueue do we proxy-migrate the donor (which requires the
more costly lock juggling). While not a huge logical change,
it did uncover other problems, which needed to be resolved.
* One issue found was there was a race where if
do_activate_blocked_waiter() from the sleeping owner wakeup
was delayed and the task had already been woken up elsewhere.
It’s possible if that task was running and called into
schedule() to be blocked, it would be dequeued from the
runqueue, but before we switched to the new task,
do_activate_blocked_waiter() might try to activate it on a
different cpu. Clearly the do_activate_blocked_waiter() needed
to check the task on_cpu value as well.
* I found that we still can hit wakeups that end up skipping the
BO_WAKING -> BO_RUNNALBE transition (causing find_proxy_task()
to end up spinning waiting for that transition), so I re-added
the logic to handle doing return migrations from
find_proxy_task() if we hit that case.
* Hupu suggested a tweak in ttwu_runnable() to evaluate
proxy_needs_return() slightly earlier.
* Kuyo Chang reported and isolated a fix for a problem with
__task_is_pushable() in the !sched_proxy_exec case, which was
folded into the “sched: Fix rt/dl load balancing via chain
level balance” patch
* Reworked some of the logic around releasing the rq->donor
reference on migrations, using rq->idle directly.
* Sueliman also pointed out that some added task_struct elements
were not being initialized in the init_task code path, so that
was good to fix.

So this balance_push() is part of schedule(), and schedule() is supposed
to switch to stopper task, but because of this race condition, stopper
task is stuck in WAKING state and not actually visible to be picked.
Therefore CPU1 can do another schedule() and end up doing another
balance_push() even though the last one hasn't been done yet.
This is a confluence of fail, where both wake_q and ttwu_wakelist can
cause crucial wakeups to be delayed, resulting in the malfunction of
balance_push.
Since there is only a single stopper thread to be woken, the wake_q
doesn't really add anything here, and can be removed in favour of
direct wakeups of the stopper thread.
Then add a clause to ttwu_queue_cond() to ensure the stopper threads
are never queued / delayed.
Of all 3 moving parts, the last addition was the balance_push()
machinery, so pick that as the point the bug was introduced.

During task_group creation, sched_create_group() calls
scx_group_set_weight() with CGROUP_WEIGHT_DFL to initialize the sched_ext
portion. This is premature and ends up calling ops.cgroup_set_weight() with
an incorrect @cgrp before ops.cgroup_init() is called.
sched_create_group() should just initialize SCX related fields in the new
task_group. Fix it by factoring out scx_tg_init() from sched_init() and
making sched_create_group() call that function instead of
scx_group_set_weight().
v2: Retain CONFIG_EXT_GROUP_SCHED ifdef in sched_init() as removing it leads
to build failures on !CONFIG_GROUP_SCHED configs.

It was reported that in 6.12, smpboot_create_threads() was
taking much longer then in 6.6.
I narrowed down the call path to:
smpboot_create_threads()
-> kthread_create_on_cpu()
-> kthread_bind()
-> __kthread_bind_mask()
->wait_task_inactive()
Where in wait_task_inactive() we were regularly hitting the
queued case, which sets a 1 tick timeout, which when called
multiple times in a row, accumulates quickly into a long
delay.
I noticed disabling the DELAY_DEQUEUE sched feature recovered
the performance, and it seems the newly create tasks are usually
sched_delayed and left on the runqueue.
So in wait_task_inactive() when we see the task
p->se.sched_delayed, manually dequeue the sched_delayed task
with DEQUEUE_DELAYED, so we don't have to constantly wait a
tick.

The commit dfa0a574cb ("sched/uclamg: Handle delayed dequeue")
has add the sched_delayed check to prevent double uclamp_dec/inc.
However, it put the uclamp_rq_inc() after enqueue_task().
This may lead to the following issues:
When a task with uclamp goes through enqueue_task() and could trigger
cpufreq update, its uclamp won't even be considered in the cpufreq
update. It is only after enqueue will the uclamp be added to rq
buckets, and cpufreq will only pick it up at the next update.
This could cause a delay in frequency updating. It may affect
the performance(uclamp_min > 0) or power(uclamp_max < 1024).
So, just like util_est, put the uclamp_rq_inc() before enqueue_task().
And as for the sched_delayed_task, same as util_est, using the
sched_delayed flag to prevent inc the sched_delayed_task's uclamp,
using the ENQUEUE_DELAYED flag to allow inc the sched_delayed_task's uclamp
which is being woken up.

There is an early bail from sched_move_task() if p->sched_task_group is
equal to p's 'cpu cgroup' (sched_get_task_group()). E.g. both are
pointing to taskgroup '/user.slice/user-1000.slice/session-1.scope'
(Ubuntu '22.04.5 LTS').

Turns out that the regression is related to sgs->group_util in
group_is_overloaded() and group_has_capacity(). If (1) isn't called for
all the 'spawn' tasks then sgs->group_util is ~900 and
sgs->group_capacity = 1024 (single CPU sched domain) and this leads to
group_is_overloaded() returning true (2) and group_has_capacity() false
(3) much more often compared to the case when (1) is called.
I.e. there are much more cases of 'group_is_overloaded' and
'group_fully_busy' in WF_FORK wakeup sched_balance_find_dst_cpu() which
then returns much more often a CPU != smp_processor_id() (5).
This isn't good for these extremely short running tasks (FORK + EXIT)
and also involves calling sched_balance_find_dst_group_cpu() unnecessary
(single CPU sched domain).
Instead if (1) is called for 'p->flags & PF_EXITING' then the path
(4),(6) is taken much more often.

As discussed in 401436689, Add some vendor hooks to facilitate
enabling sched_ext in subsequent OGKI kernels.
For the newly added android_vh_task_should_scx in kernel/sched/core.c,
we decided to switch all rt tasks to ext. In fact, this is not a
risky attempt. We have already done this in our released products
(hmbird scheduler), and it works well.
The concept of this hook is not to raise the priority of sched_ext
above RT, but to let sched_ext manage all tasks. Inside sched_ext,
we will still give the original rt task a very high priority and
regroup the priority of rt. The grouping basis may be heavy rt,
light rt, user experience related rt, kernel rt, etc., and make
some scheduling distinctions. At the same time, the main reason
for incorporating rt into sched_ext management is that we can
easily do core ctrl, task aggregation, task placement, interaction
with the idle system, and targeted frequency adjustment (if there
is a stable expectation for the execution of tasks on the CPU,
frequency adjustment will be easier).

It comes with the commit efbb82d3b0db ("ANDROID: Add a vendor hook
that allow a module to modify the wake flag"). A vendor who want to
hook sock_def_readable can set this vendor-specific wake flag.

__wake_up_common -> default_wake_function
It is an Android-specific since it works with a vendor hook.

This is a long standing problem, which probably got more visible with
the recent printk changes. Something does a task wakeup and the
scheduler sets the NEED_RESCHED flag. cond_resched() sees it set and
invokes schedule() from a completely bogus context. The scheduler
enables interrupts after context switching, which causes the above
warning at the end.
Quite some of the code paths in syscore_suspend()/resume() can result in
triggering a wakeup with the exactly same consequences. They might not
have done so yet, but as they share a lot of code with normal operations
it's just a question of time.
The problem only affects the PREEMPT_NONE and PREEMPT_VOLUNTARY scheduling
models. Full preemption is not affected as cond_resched() is disabled and
the preemption check preemptible() takes the interrupt disabled flag into
account.
Cure the problem by adding a corresponding check into cond_resched().

Delayed dequeued feature keeps a sleeping sched_entitiy enqueued until its
lag has elapsed. So the dequeue_task maybe fail when the task is not
eligible.
So add the dequeue_task_result to the after_deuqueu_task vh to
notify the vendor modules.

scx_move_task() is called from sched_move_task() and tells the BPF scheduler
that cgroup migration is being committed. sched_move_task() is used by both
cgroup and autogroup migrations and scx_move_task() tried to filter out
autogroup migrations by testing the destination cgroup and PF_EXITING but
this is not enough. In fact, without explicitly tagging the thread which is
doing the cgroup migration, there is no good way to tell apart
scx_move_task() invocations for racing migration to the root cgroup and an
autogroup migration.
This led to scx_move_task() incorrectly ignoring a migration from non-root
cgroup to an autogroup of the root cgroup triggering the following warning:

Fix it by adding an argument to sched_move_task() that indicates whether the
moving is for a cgroup or autogroup migration. After the change,
scx_move_task() is called only for cgroup migrations and renamed to
scx_cgroup_move_task().

For fair tasks inheriting the priority (nice) without reweighting is
a NOP as the task's share won't change.
This is visible when running with PTHREAD_PRIO_INHERIT where fair tasks
with low priority values are susceptible to starvation leading to PI
like impact on lock contention.
The logic in rt_mutex will reset these low priority fair tasks into nice
0, but without the additional reweight operation to actually update the
weights, it doesn't have the desired impact of boosting them to allow
them to run sooner/longer to release the lock.
Apply the reweight for fair_policy() tasks to achieve the desired boost
for those low nice values tasks. Note that boost here means resetting
their nice to 0; as this is what the current logic does for fair tasks.
We need to re-instate ordering fair tasks by their priority order on the
waiter tree to ensure we inherit the top_waiter properly.
Handling of idle_policy() requires more code refactoring and is not
handled yet. idle_policy() are treated specially and only run when the
CPU is idle and get a hardcoded low weight value. Changing weights won't
be enough without a promotion first to SCHED_OTHER.
Tested with a test program that creates three threads.
1. main thread that spawns high prio and low prio task and busy
loops
2. low priority thread that holds a pthread_mutex() with
PTHREAD_PRIO_INHERIT protocol. Runs at nice +10. Busy loops
after holding the lock.
3. high priority thread that holds a pthread_mutex() with
PTHREADPTHREAD_PRIO_INHERIT, but made to start after the low
priority thread. Runs at nice 0. Should remain blocked by the
low priority thread.
All tasks are pinned to CPU0.
Without the patch I can see the low priority thread running only for
~10% of the time which is what expected without it being boosted.
With the patch the low priority thread runs for ~50% which is what
expected if it gets boosted to nice 0.
I modified the test program logic afterwards to ensure that after
releasing the lock the low priority thread goes back to running for 10%
of the time, and it does.
This is a temporary workaround until Proxy Execution is available and
connected to futex_pi. The inheritance logic won't work with SCHED_IDLE
nor with cgroup cpu.shares as inheriting these is complex and requires
Proxy Execution. But users of PTHREAD_PRIO_INHERIT will see that fair
tasks inherit nice value and will address a common class of existing
problems until Proxy Execution has fully landed.

I encountered an issue where Perfetto sometimes fails to display the
blocked function when a thread enters the D state.
The problem arises from the caller value in the trace_sched_blocked_reason,
and I observed the following outputs while using bpftrace:

When try_to_wake_up is waking a thread executing __schedule, it can trigger
the trace_sched_blocked_reason. This function attempts to obtain the
thread's backtrace using __get_wchan. However, __get_wchan requires the
thread to be blocking in cpu_switch_to, which is not always the case.

When steal time exceeds the measured delta when updating clock_task, we
currently try to catch up the excess in future updates.
However, this results in inaccurate run times for the future things using
clock_task, in some situations, as they end up getting additional steal
time that did not actually happen.
This is because there is a window between reading the elapsed time in
update_rq_clock() and sampling the steal time in update_rq_clock_task().
If the VCPU gets preempted between those two points, any additional
steal time is accounted to the outgoing task even though the calculated
delta did not actually contain any of that "stolen" time.
When this race happens, we can end up with steal time that exceeds the
calculated delta, and the previous code would try to catch up that excess
steal time in future clock updates, which is given to the next,
incoming task, even though it did not actually have any time stolen.
This behavior is particularly bad when steal time can be very long,
which we've seen when trying to extend steal time to contain the duration
that the host was suspended [0]. When this happens, clock_task stays
frozen, during which the running task stays running for the whole
duration, since its run time doesn't increase.
However the race can happen even under normal operation.
Ideally we would read the elapsed cpu time and the steal time atomically,
to prevent this race from happening in the first place, but doing so
is non-trivial.
Since the time between those two points isn't otherwise accounted anywhere,
neither to the outgoing task nor the incoming task (because the "end of
outgoing task" and "start of incoming task" timestamps are the same),
I would argue that the right thing to do is to simply drop any excess steal
time, in order to prevent these issues.

When running hackbench in a cgroup with bandwidth throttling enabled,
following PSI splat was observed:

psi_dequeue() relies on psi_sched_switch() to set the correct PSI flags
for the blocked entity, however, with the introduction of DELAY_DEQUEUE,
the block task can wakeup when newidle balance drops the runqueue lock
during __schedule().
If a task wakes before psi_sched_switch() adjusts the PSI flags, skip
any modifications in psi_enqueue() which would still see the flags of a
running task and not a blocked one. Instead, rely on psi_sched_switch()
to do the right thing.
Since the status returned by try_to_block_task() may no longer be true
by the time schedule reaches psi_sched_switch(), check if the task is
blocked or not using a combination of task_on_rq_queued() and
p->se.sched_delayed checks.

What psi needs to do on each enqueue and dequeue has gotten more
subtle, and the generic sched code trying to distill this into a bool
for the callbacks is awkward.
Pass the flags directly and let psi parse them. For that to work, the
#include "stats.h" (which has the psi callback implementations) needs
to be below the flag definitions in "sched.h". Move that section
further down, next to some of the other accounting stuff.
This also puts the ENQUEUE_SAVE/RESTORE branch behind the psi jump
label, slightly reducing overhead when PSI=y but runtime disabled.

With proxy-execution, we add an extra check such that should the task
have already been woken up, but it is still in the BO_WAKING state,
thus potentially needed return-migration, we avoid breaking out of
try_to_wakeup() in order so that the proxy_needs_return() logic in
ttwu_runnable() can dequeue the task and allow it to be woken on its
wake_cpu (effecively doing the return migration).
As reported kuyo chang, this check is not conditionalized by
sched_proxy_exec(), so when proxy-execution is disabled its possible
for us to hit this case, and continue to ttwu_runnable(), however
we won't do the proxy_needs_return() logic as it is conditionalized,
resulting in the enqueued task being enqueued again, triggering
warnings.
